Braselton Grist Mill
Braselton, Georgia

About the Project

The historic Enterprise Flour & Grist Mill was originally constructed around 1900 by the Braselton Brothers, who founded the town. A modern operation in its time, the three-story wood-framed mill withstood the 1920 tornado and ran until the mid-1960s. It was carefully stabilized by the town in 2010, and the original equipment remains fully intact today.

With an eye toward preserving the heritage property while adapting it for modern use, the historic mill was preserved with reinforced foundations and connected to a new steel and wood-framed office addition and entry walkway. The addition, designed to minimize alterations to the mill, provides leasable office space for the Visitors Bureau Authority, generating income while allowing the historic mill to function as a museum.

A one-story glass lobby bridges the historic structure and the new addition, creating a beautiful public entrance and minimizing visual alterations to the existing mill building. A raised boardwalk connects the town sidewalk to the entrance without disturbing existing topography or stormwater management. The exposed steel frame of the addition echoes the mill’s historic character, achieving the perfect blend of past and future design.
