The Amphitheatre won an Outstanding Project Award from the Structural Engineers Association of Georgia and the Greenspace won a Trailblazers Award from the Georgia Association of Convention of Visitors Bureaus, both in 2024.
Formerly the site of the Douglas county jail, this beautiful greenspace features a new stage structure for an amphitheater with the capacity for 3700 attendees. The stage features unequal butterfly-shaped roof planes with steel columns, custom fabricated glulam timber beams with a valley at the center and large cantilevers, and concealed steel splice plates and CNC machined timber connections. Rigging loads were engineered to support speakers, lights, and special effects equipment, and the back of house structure is enclosed with tall CMU walls of varying heights and large glass openings. Tall concrete screen walls flank the stage. The project also included repurposing the existing concrete stair / elevator tower to add a roof deck level for VIPs attending events, a concierge building with its own rooftop space, and a refurbished pedestrian bridge over Church Street. The custom design and fabrication for the amphitheater required a good amount of coordination between our team and TSW to achieve the design for this massive structure.
