About the Project

Event Barn & Ranch House Restoration

Cataloochee Ranch, located in Maggie Valley North Carolin, has a long history of providing families an authentic mountain experience steeped in tradition and natural beauty. The ranch predated the establishment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and was the first to provide accommodation for early visitors to the Park. However, after nearly a century, its historic structures were in dire need of restoration; so the renovation team’s approach focused on preserving the essence of the Ranch while adapting its structures for modern use.

The original horse Barn’s stone foundation required comprehensive stabilization to be used as an event space
including repairs of its stone masonry foundation and reinforcement of the gambrel roof trusses and timber support framing. Large new window bays were added to the gable ends of the building to provide enhanced natural light and sweeping mountain views; while the surrounding original wood framing was preserved, reinforced in place, and left exposed for aesthetics. A new wing addition expanded the event space while maintaining the barn’s rustic charm; and a new internal open stairwell now seamlessly connects the upper and lower levels, improving accessibility and functionality.

The Ranch House was meticulously reconstructed using historically appropriate heavy timber and lumber truss framing, ensuring both durability and authenticity. The original stacked stone walls were carefully preserved and integrated into the new design, maintaining the historic character of the structure. The dining hall was transformed with overbuilt scissor trusses and timber-framed extensions leading to a covered terrace and monumental stone fireplace. Black Locust timber was sourced to retain the lodge’s historic aesthetic. Wherever possible, original materials were salvaged and repurposed, including interior paneling and beams, reinforcing the project’s commitment to historic preservation. Modern upgrades such as a new kitchen and expanded outdoor dining areas allow the space to serve guests for years to come without compromising its historic charm.
